Time Blocking: Maximize Your Firms Productivity

If you are a solopreneutime blockr you are wearing a lot of hats and juggling the demands of running a busy practice can be made easier with the help of one powerful productivity hack; time blocking.

According to Gary Keller, co-founder and chairman of Keller Williams Realty in his book The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results he asks himself “”What’s the one thing which, when tackled, will make everything else I have to do easier or unnecessary?” The first four hours of the day are spent doing that one thing.

As a solo practitioner if you shut the phone off for four hours per day you are likely going to lose business and annoy your clients. A great way to have your time block and eat it too is to use a virtual receptionist during your time blocks. Many of our attorney’s use time blocking in which several hours are dedicated to a single task. During these times we’re taking messages from clients and colleagues, weeding out solicitors and scheduling appointments for new client consultations.

We have received wonderful responses from clients who know that their attorney will return their call at a specific time. For example, one of our attorney’s has advised he returns all calls same day during a scheduled time block of 2:00 – 5:00. His clients are satisfied knowing when they will receive a return call and because he utilizes time blocks effectively he is able to return all calls without interruption.

Once you begin using time blocking you’ll discover it actually allows more freedom in your day. According to Harvard Business Review when you are not fully engaged with one task you are costing yourself a 25% increase in time to complete a task.
